I was walking through the vielle ville (old town) of Nice, when I heard loud drumming, tambourines, and whistles coming from down the narrow street. When I looked ahead, I saw a parade of people dancing and beating their drums; it was a sea of white, green, blue, and yellow. It was some sort of Afro-Brazilian musical celebration, and it sent an electric pulse of excitement through every crack of the vielle ville.
I immediately wanted to take out my camera and snap a few shots: "how great would this be for my albums?!" But I didn't have my camera. Not even my phone for a basic picture! | I was forced to watch the parade, without the distractions of trying to capture the moment. |
At first, I was disappointed, but I quickly realized how great of an opportunity the situation presented me. I was forced to watch the parade, without the distractions of trying to capture the moment.
The moment was short and sweet, but I'll be able to remember it as it really was rather than through the lens of my camera. I'm a little bummed out that I can't share any photos at all, since people tend to like photos more than reading text, but to get a feel for what I experienced, you can check out Bloco Panagea, which was one of the groups that was in the parade!
If you'd like to challenge yourself, I suggest trying to limit the number of photos you take next time you go out to an event!
For example: Going on a camping trip? Take only 21 photos the whole weekend: it's the same number that you'd have if you were to use a disposable camera! Limiting the number of photos you're allowed to take really makes you think about what moments you want to capture, and when you should put the camera down and just enjoy yourself.
