Breathe in.
The sharp pain in my chest is blinding
And at first I don't see how it will ever be subdued.
It sits in my middle, slowly sinks to my core, and settles.
Hold.
A million thoughts go through my mind.
They weave and echo like waves on a turbulent sea,
Masterfully crafting the ups and downs of a small boat
At its mercy.
Perhaps I could sit like this forever.
Perhaps not.
Breathe out.
Calm and steady, the pain passes my lips with the air.
I am reminded that downs have ups and knives have handles.
I have reached the end of my outward breath.
Again.
Again.
