A month dedicated to chocolate's most easily consumable form - liquid. You can be certain that I'll be there.
I find it hard to motivate myself to venture far from my apartment, but I'll travel far and wide for chocolate. When I heard that Vancouver had a Hot Chocolate Festival, I knew that it was something I had to experience. My friend (and fellow vegan food enthusiast/blogger/photographer) Katie has been dedicated to the cause (yes, it's a cause, and yes, it's very nobel of her), and this weekend we ventured out to a quaint place called Eternal Abundance.

The store had two flavours offered for the Festival, but unfortunately was already sold out of the one I most interested in: Green Silk Kimono.
We were luckily able to try the other suggested drink, Chaga Mushroom Hot Chocolate, paired with a Coconut Creme Truffle. And because it'd be ridiculous to have just hot chocolate and truffles for breakfast, we also opted to share some quinoa waffles with pears, maple syrup, and a buttery spread.

I was pleasantly surprised with the waffles - I'm not usually one to pick waffles as my breakfast of choice, but these waffles were a sweet-but-not-too-sweet way to start the day. The pears offered a unique flavour and texture to each bite, and the buttery spread had a delicious mouthfeel.
I was pretty impressed by the waffles, but definitely didn't forget the reason we were there! The hot chocolate was decadent but not sweet. It reminded me of unsweetened dark chocolate, with a bit of warm spices added (possibly the mushrooms? or nutmeg?). It's not what I'd suggest for someone looking for a sweet treat, but people who are adverse to sweet desserts would likely love it! Additionally, the coconut creme truffle was a nice treat on the side, and its heart shape was a small reminder of the fast-approaching Valentine's Day.

During our outing, this little girl was blowing bubbles just by our window, and I felt unapologetically creepy enough to take a few photos. Enjoy the product of my impromptu photo op.
